Last night it was our turn to have my husband's in-town family over for Family Home Evening. It was my turn to give the lesson and I had felt prompted a few weeks ago to do it on testimony. It was interesting that our Sacrament Meeting talks the day before were on testimonies too. It just confirmed my decision.
We talked about Alma and his teachings on faith and testimonies in Alma 32:28-43. I had a little flannel board story with a seed that you 'plant' in a heart. Then you nourish it with water and sun and it grows into a tree that bears fruit. That worked well with the little ones.
Then we talked about the ways to gain or 'grow' our own testimony. 1. want one (1 Nephi 2:16) 2. pray for one (D&C 42:51) 3. work for one (Ether 12:6) 4. enjoy & share (John 8:32) 5. care for it (Mosiah 2:41).
Then we had an optional testimony meeting. I was so happy when most of us chose to bear our testimonies of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was a wonderful experience, especially as a family.
Afterwards, I had the kids plant a couple of bean seeds in a cup to take home. I made little 'signs' on popsicle sticks to remind everyone to work on 'growing' their testimonies. A very successful night.

you should check out my blog post today, there's something for you :)
You inspire me! Thanks. I've always wanted to do something like that with my family...but I think it would scare them to death. :)
